In a statement released by Iowa State University, it was confirmed that a capsized boat at Little Wall Lake in Hamilton County was from the Iowa State Crew Club. Five students were onboard when their boat capsized Sunday morning resulting in the death of one student and the disappearance of another. The three students who were rescued have been released from the hospital following the event.
The search is still ongoing for the missing student. In a statement released by Hamilton County Sheriff Doug Timmons, the names of those involved will not be released to respect the privacy of the families and individuals involved in this incident.
Iowa State President Wendy Wintersteen released this statement on Sunday:
“The Iowa State community is heartbroken to learn of this tragic accident at Little Wall Lake. At this time, we are focused on providing support to club members, their families and friends. We ask that everyone keep them in their thoughts during this very difficult time. On behalf of the university community, I want to thank the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, Story County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team, Department of Natural Resources, Iowa State University Police Department, Jewel Fire and Rescue, Gilbert Fire, Mary Greeley Medical Center and community members for their response and continued search efforts.”
