my anti-aircraft friend – julie Review

By Owen Nebel

The Band julie, has finally made their full-length debut with their LP “my anti-aircraft friend” released earlier in the month on September 13th, 2024 with Atlantic Records.  The album itself is a fuzzy, heavy, 39 minute rollercoaster, opening with their single “catalogue”. The album definitely has a higher level of production compared to their earlier singles and EP’s, but they still definitely bring the same energy and angst to their music as they always have. A stand out song is “tenebrist” which brings heavy distorted guitar, but slows the tempo with interludes leading to almost explosive sections of the song perfect for any listener who enjoys headbanging or moshing.

The album is a nice refresher from this summer’s releases of electronic albums and welcomes the fall season with ripping, heavy, distorted guitar(As it should be). With an almost Smashing Pumpkins sounding fuzz at times, julie have taken a step back from their noise-filled and almost underproduced single “flutter” from 2020, and adopted a somewhat more polished sound, although this is probably due to the production on the album. By no means is this a “polished” album though, with songs like “ill cook my own meals” being filled almost entirely with distorted guitar and heavy-hitting drums. Overall julie came out swinging with a very solid debut album, and I’m very excited to see what they cook up next.

If you would like to catch julie live, they are playing a show in the Windy City on October 15th at Thalia Hall if you think it’s worth the trip, and heck maybe I’ll see you there.
