Standout Singles 9/10-9/24

Written by Various Authors

Every 2 weeks, Music Review Committee comes together and puts together the 6 best singles that came out in the last 2 weeks. Here’s a little bit about the songs we chose this time around! from some members of MRC!

Owen Schlesinger – Rusty mountain by Neko Case: Neko Case’s warm voice has always been at the forefront of her music, and it unsurprisingly has aged beautifully throughout her nearly 25-year career. On “Rusty Mountain”, sweeping strings back her soaring melodies, and this being her first self-produced album creates a beautiful interplay between the instrumentals and her singing. Her beautiful, frustrated poetry on appreciation in relationships is just the cherry on top.

Dzevad Busnov – Audiostalker by Jane Remover & Lucy Bedroque: The Digicore-to-Rage Pipeline ™ is in full effect. This song was already a highlight from Jane Remover’s phantom mixtape “Indie Rock”, and it gets even better with a smooth feature from Lucy Bedroque.

Anna Eggers – Huatulco by Goth Babe: Huatulco from Goth Babe’s new ep takes you through a journey with subtle pulses graduating growing more intense and falling with string accompaniment surprises. It puts an indie feel to an electric beats track. With no lyrics it still creates a sense of adventure and discovery while giving interpretive freedom to the listeners.

Payton Lehman – Stardust by Danny Brown: Danny Brown is back in the studio, and kicking off a new album cycle with his latest single being titled “Stardust”. “Stardust” is a 5 minute off-the-wall track that cleverly displays Danny Brown’s serious lyricism juxtaposed by his hilarious punch lines, and of course his off kilter production. The track has that classic Danny Brown style using the most unlikely samples, sounds and vocal chops that I can’t even begin to describe, and including one of Danny Brown’s most hardest beat switches I have heard from his catalog. All in all, “Stardust” is an incredibly wild track that builds up much anticipation and excitement for this new album.

Ryan Watson – Yarn by Weatherday: Released on a compilation dedicated to a friend and fellow musician who recently passed away, Yarn is another amazing Weatherday noise pop track. The song is very reminiscent of the work they did on “Hornet Disaster” with screaming guitars and clipping guitars soundtracking Sputnik’s rough and passionate vocals. Yarn starts off with a bang but towards the end it reels back in a bit to close off on a sweeter and more somber note.

Jules Michalski – SAX-A-MA-PHONE VAR. XII by Frog: SAX-A-MA-PHONE is just Frog having fun making a funky jazzy little jam. It has frontman Daniel Bateman getting looser with his songwriting and even rapping at some point. Even though the song might seem a bit out there for the band, it’s most definitely still Frog.
