Standout Singles 10/8-10/22

Every 2 weeks, Music Review Committee comes together and puts together the 6 best singles that came out in the last 2 weeks. Here’s a little bit about the songs we chose this time around! from some members of MRC!

Noel Stecher – Lucy’s World by Guided by Voices: Guided by Voices newest single Lucy’s world marks a return to form, as one of their best songs since the early 2000s. The prolific and legendary alt rock band does what they do best: a short, fun, and catchy song in their signature lofi sound.

Madden Mcfarlane – Anger is an Arch by Horse Jumper of Love: “Anger is an Arch” is a teaser for Horse Jumper of Love’s upcoming deluxe version of their most recent album, Disaster Trick. This single delivers a sound that fits perfectly as an addition to Disaster Trick and serves as an excellent theme for an angsty fall/winter.

Anna Eggers – Pea by Gliiico: A band of three brothers, Gliiico, released their new single “Pea”. This track opens with a spacey synth followed by energetic bass and fast beat. Their effortless voices really adds to the nostalgic essence of the song.

JFitz – Lifeworld by Oneohtrix Point Never: Electronic producer Daniel Lopatin returns for another project under the OPN name, released as a series of weekly EPs. On the first entry in this series, he drifts away from the symphonic maximalism he explored on his previous record towards a dreamlike, sound-collage style, similar to his work in the early 2010s. The result is abrasive yet beautiful, and makes me really excited to hear the full album.

Dzevad Busnov – Copycats by Danny Brown (ft. underscores): In a fair and just world, this is the biggest hit of the year. Danny Brown kills it as usual, and Underscore provides ridiculous production and an earworm of a chorus. Another great addition to the canon of pop songs that say “being famous sucks, actually.”

Julien Michalski – Human Happens by Magdalena Bay: On the newest in the series of singles by synthpop duo Magdalena Bay, Mica mediates on the topic of change and how the world is taking a turn for the worse due to the actions of humanity. The dark subject matter is contrasted by a beautiful instrumental consisting of a booming drum section playing in sync with some classic dreamy Mag-Bay synths. Human Happens acts as standout installment in this grouping of singles Matt and Mica have been putting out.
