East Londoner Cherie Jones recently released New Skin, which is her first full album. Her music elegantly walks the line between soul and pop and I absolutely love it. The album covers all bases, it has the love songs, the ballads, the upbeat songs all while covering a full spectrum of emotion. Jones can seamlessly switch her voice from a delicate whisper to a voice full of empowerment in no time at all.
Rainbow, the album’s introductory track, addresses feeling trapped and dark but then finding the silver lining or in other words a rainbow. I think that this song is directly related to the general takeaway of the whole album. The takeaway is that it’s perfectly alright to feel what your feeling and to just trust that everything will get better. It will always get better.
Over the last two years, Jones worked away on the album with Sam Smith’s co-writer and Justin Parker, a collaborator of Lana Del Rey. She learned a lot from such established people in the music industry. Jones recently just ended a tour with HONNE in the United States.
This album truly stands out but doesn’t try to be something that it’s not. The only problem I found with this album is that the songs could be sung by anyone. Jones could have pushed herself more as the second third of the album lacked in innovation. At the young age of 25 she will have plenty of time to learn and grow her music for the future.
